Anonymous-Frog's News

Posted by Anonymous-Frog - 1 month ago

After writing this post speaking out against Koikatsu Party (NSFW), I STILL keep seeing this opinion that Newgrounds hates 3D art and that the site is hypocritical with their stances, primarily from 'artists' who use SFM or Koikatsu or similar (a good chunk of them NSFW). Just search "newgrounds 3d" on Twitter and search each post by date and you'll find them.

If you are or know someone who's one of "those guys" who still think Newgrounds is wrong for taking down their 3D stuff, please refer to this page or share it on Twitter if you can. This is why I've written this FAQ.

Does Newgrounds hate 3D work?

A. No! They have their own official category in the Art Portal. Here are some brilliant 3D artists featured on this site: jumpbreak96, Avovet, Crisppyboat, NoodleDood12, ZayJax, Potatoman, or just search the Featured section under "3D Art". Most people don't specifically filter 3D art, or only ever check NSFW art, so it's really easy to miss.

Why are they so strict with 3D art? They seem to have some bias against it!

A. You are taking one or more 3D character models you've found online or some other 3rd party source, you're posing it inside a 3D scene, also taken elsewhere, and the only thing you've added yourself is that you've posed them a certain way and you've tweaked the lighting. That's it! Doesn't take much work. At most, you give yourself 10-20 minutes to make your own changes to the model (like with Koikatsu Party, where a "custom" model can be sized up and given different clothing)

The 2D equivalent would be to take an existing image (or worst, an existing artpiece) and trace over it. Tracing is heavily frowned upon within the art community, so why does it seem like this isn't?. In most cases, you're losing out on essential fundamentals, including but not limited to anatomy, composition, and stylization. Look at the above 3D artists (see the first question) and then look at your own shit. Is there anything missing?

I'm pretty sure the only bias you could actually detect is that I don't know a thing about 3D. At best I had a small low-poly stint with Blender that I never post here, but that's about it!

Are they "antagonistic" towards people who "can't completely create their own 3D assets"?

A. Let me put it to you in a different way. "People who can't create their own assets" in other words just means "people who are talentless with 3D art", not necessarily 3D animation or rigging.

From what I know, there do exist jobs in the 3D animation industry that mainly involve setting up and animating rigs given to you by different members of the studio, not necessarily requiring your own modelling skills. Similar to how in 2D animation, there are different jobs for rough animation, cleanup, and in-betweens, or for rigging and animating like in 3D, though you might not need all of them to hold a job, but you don't see people complaining about how they can't upload the Johnny Test rig in their works, or their storyboards.

But when it comes to creating 3D ART, where people are judging you based on artistic merit, it's best to have an all-around set of skills necessary to create the entire thing from start to finish, not just excel in one specific skill and suck at the rest. This ESPECIALLY includes 3D modelling and texturing, as that's where most of the "style" comes from. If you're not able to show any of those skills from scratch, you're probably not a good 3D artist, you're just playing around with fancy toys!

Why is my 3rd party stuff bad when they've allowed SPRITE MOVIES on NG for 20+ years?

A. Sprite movies, or movies that borrow Krinkels' Madness Combat assets, etc, fall under Movie Guidelines, where they're fairly loose with 3rd party assets, only taking down shit if it's low-effort shovelware or gameplay clips, so they are allowed within reason.

But these are NOT the same rules as with the Art Portal, which follow Art Guidelines.

Here, you pretty much have to put in the skill and effort to model the entire thing yourself, not just pose it and tweak the lighting.

Your piece WILL be removed if you primarily rely on borrowed 3D models or you use programs such as Koikatsu and MetaHuman, which are explicitly banned for being classified as "scene creators".

If you can't model for shit, stay away from the Art Portal.

There are whole sections tagged "koikatsu" or "sfm". Why should I suffer when these others haven't?

A. No, those are not part of a site-endorsed "section", those are just different submissions tagged with "koikatsu" or "sfm". Anyone can set those tags, and usually it means they're the first to be checked.

You may think you could just not use those tags to avoid detection, but if you have to go out of your way to HIDE yourself from potential consequences, like a criminal on the run, there's a good chance you shouldn't have done it to begin with!

Why is my stuff equivalent to "shovelware"?

A. Newgrounds prides itself on its creators putting in the work to create something amazing, whether it be for animations, games, music, or art. Again, all you did was pose a few existing character models and change the lighting, maybe you used a modelling template, which should never take more than 1 day. 2 days tops! You're not trying to be artistic, you just want to finish as many as you can to please a small crowd of paying Patreon supporters, and even if you are trying to be artistic, it clearly doesn't look like it.

Meanwhile, some works can take 3 days or even weeks to finish (especially if you're not working on it full-time or do other projects). And you're the one questioning if it's "shovelware". This attitude also exists with AI art (also prohibited), ie. the "AI bros" who think they're better then everyone and think their AI technology will triumph over human art.

What counts as a scene creator or third party assets?

A. Scene creators, as per the Art Guidelines, are defined as "Any software where you arrange pre-made assets"

In other words, they don't let you do the same things as "real" 3D programs (eg. Blender), like modelling, texturing, lighting, rigging, animating, etc. all from scratch.

NG has a list of programs you could use to create art, Multiple 3D programs are listed (including Blender, one of the most popular, as well as Maya and 3D Studio Max). Any other 3D program should be comparable to any of them.

Although they are fully-fledged professional programs, and not scene creators, they can still be used to create the same 3rd party crap, simply by downloading and importing already existing .blend or similar files, To mitigate this, there's this rule:

"Any 3D assets not modeled by the uploader should not be primary elements of your piece and should be credited and linked to when possible, to help us determine if the submission is suitably original / transformative."

Meanwhile, here are some programs largely considered as scene creators or commonly used alongside 3rd party assets:

  • Koikatsu Party (Not allowed, period. here ya go!),
  • CharaStudio (A feature in Koikatsu. Characters made with this could be classed as 3rd-party assets, so not allowed)
  • Gacha Life (Not allowed, though it's 2D not 3D.)
  • SFM (Works mostly with third party models, use only if you've created the models yourself, contact Tom if it's still removed)
  • GMod (same as SFM)
  • Honey Select (A NSFW sex sim, Similar to SFM, so don't use it for still-frame renders)
  • Unreal's MetaHuman (Not allowed, the software creates human models)
  • Daz3D (Not allowed, largely consists of 3rd party assets)
  • Video game screenshots, ie. machinima, or anything with a level editor (Not allowed)

If you have more questions, or opinions, feel free to add them here in the comments.

Big news: A+B is hosting a music collab in the NGAP Collab Center.

Introducing: A Sine of Relief (aka the Sine Wave Collab)

Basically, the whole theme is sinewaves. They should sound like this, only you can use them in different pitches (or with subtle tone differences):

MAIN GUIDELINES:

1- Main rule: The majority of the song should largely consist of sine waves. Keep all other instruments to a minimum

(some drums or harsher-toned instruments for example, can be used as a balance, or you could use nothing else)

Furthermore, the sines themselves can be modified in subtle ways (ie. pitch reverb, distortion, filters, etc.),

2- Your song can otherwise be in any genre. Soft classical compositions, fast-paced techno, you name it!

3- I want to keep it E-rated, so avoid explicit language/words.

4- Samples, synthesisers, VSTs, trackers, DAWs, Beepbox, etc. if it supports sine waves, you can use it.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

  • Submission length: 1-8 minutes
  • You can make as many submissions as you want, provided they all total 8 minutes maximum.
  • Submit a WAV, FLAC or other high quality audio format (as long as it's not crispy potato fries). Share the file or a private download link in either my DMS of in the Discord.
  • Deadline: May 1st

RELEASE GUIDELINES:

You can publicly release your submission on Newgrounds provided you:

  • Wait until the collab releases, or sometime around the deadline. Let me know beforehand. Any earlier and you may need official confirmation.
  • Link to either the NGAP Collab Center or if applicable, the finished collab on NG (optional).

Hi.

If you're reading this, you're probably asking to yourself.. Who the hell is "Jim Melon"?

Who is Jim Melon

"Jim Melon" is the name used by several hacked accounts in the past week. They can be identified with a melon wearing sunglasses.

They all say something along the lines of "WE ARE THE JIM MELON LEGION" and "TOM FULP IS MY BITCH" or something like that. They also frequently use penises to annoy the NG userbase.

Contrary to the name, this is not an actual crew, akin to the Duck Division, as they don't really make submissions themselves. It could also just be one person.

Jim Melon Legion "members"

Several recognizable accounts were hacked, including some you may have heard of: These include:

-Falconer02: Creator of Minecraft: TNA: Deleted, restored 12/29/23 11PM EST.

-Blordow: Popular animator from the 2010s, created the Salty Swamp series and his involvment with Jerma985. Briefly deleted, but now mostly restored (pfp, banner, some blogs, some movies are lost).

-lockebelmonte: Fairly known artist from 2009 to 2018. Remained deleted for the longest ouf of this list. Had entire catalog fileswapped and later deleted.

-chibixi: Briefly deleted, now seemingly fixed

-RebelRager: Seemingly resolved without getting deleted

-Choko17: NSFW Artist last active in 2015. Seems to be fixed:

-FuturecopLGF: Guy who makes those "Best Games of the Month" videos. Renamed to "JimMelonLegion" and commented on this post. Lost several games and submissions for a few days.

-princessninjato: Game dev. Had 5 Art submissions hacked and removed.

This will be updated as soon as new information comes along. If you're on this list, please update your password and add 2-factor authentic

What to do now?

  1. Reminder to use TWO FACTOR AUTHENTICATION and take every reasonable measure to keep your account safe. I was lucky enough to have done that months ago, so apologies if I scared you.
  2. Update your password,
  3. Report any hacked accounts to @TomFulp or other moderators via PM. Flag any hacked submissions or photos of penises.
  4. Anything after those three aren't really that important. Maybe watch some YouTube

Hello again! You're probably reading this to see what I've done this year. Nothing much to see here, but for anyone who's interested, I'm pretty much at the same point as I was in September.

January:

Not very proud of this one. In 2022, I joined a revival of the spam group called the Kitty Krew, originally ran by old member 321, who later creeped out some minors and got permanently ousted from the group. Over time, I worked my way to a sort-of leadership role, and made a few submissions and collabs of my own. I wanted to set a new standard for the group and try to fix their failing reputation, this included trying to make higher quality spam.

This month, I tried to kick out a returning member under the assumption they were 321, which got me kicked out. He looked a bit creepy, and published a not-so kid friendly submission on the Portal, so I didn't want to take any chances.

I had a backup server which I intended to fork out as a spinoff group, but I quickly abandoned the idea.

I have no plans to take part in any similar groups. I'll stick to the good ol' fashioned Clock Crew and maybe Star Syndicate, if they were both more active and open to new members.

I also indefinitely delayed a Pixel Day submission. It may come out next year, but who knows?

February:

I took a few days to make a scene for the Friendly Frog Collab by @midgetsausage around this time. (may have been in late January, but I'm trying to fill time.)

See the 4:30 ish mark somewhere.

Even that was there to fill time. Nothing else to see here:

I was also brought on by @RareKirby to create a set of backgrounds for his cartoon (see May)

March:

I released a shitpost centered around Ukinojoe's Frumplequest character, as he was at the time making shitpost Rick and Morty parodies. It did ok on YouTube too.

March 10th, aka Mario Day, was the day Power Star Reanimated debuted with its first part. I slaved away at one of the scenes the months prior after several delays. I also took over as one of the hosts earlier this year. Since then, the collab's Discord is now the central hub for the entire fandom, as well as other official Power Star projects

April:

April 1st was Clock Day, but I wasn't aware of it until the last minute, so I wasn't able to submit anything.

I started the group A+B with the talented @BeepBoxClock. We conceived and released our first album Dipthong in about a week

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFq_kmjrYsw

May:

RareKirby's Mega Man An Asshole released. I finished my work in April

I did art for a Lock Day game. Didn't like how it turned out, no offense @greateday.

Assisted on a Clock movie, coincidentally also released on Lock Day.

I also overheard @Emrox winning the Flash Forward Jam (movie category) with Artifacts, and started work on a similar demo. I hope to finish it for next year's jam.

https://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1524609

June-July

Most of my time was spent conceiving a large-scale short film, as well as the odd art piece here and there.

Also got accustomed to Adobe Animate (the new version) and a stylus (partial use) to make this motion graphic loop.

As both one and two halves of A+B, we started work on a second album.

Drew one extra background.

August:

Clock Day #2 was August 15th. That meant game time. I wish I had fleshed this out more, but I left it to the last minute. Better luck next year I guess!

iShowSpeed showed his meat, iSpammedAnotherFlash.

The rest of the month was drafting and animating a large Madness Day project.

But not before a few detours.

September:

Madness: Operation X released, using music by @50Steaks, an underrated composer whom I desperately tried to promote.

This movie follows Captain Yellowstone, a lone soldier sent by a "mysterious" helicopter pilot to defeat Elon Musk and destroy his eponymous initiative. THIS is how you do a NG vs Twitter movie.

This is by far my biggest movie this year. The only others to top this aren't finished yet.

Also broshipped Yellowstone with @GabrielBarsch, the only other Madness character to share a primary colour.

October:

Tried a new Inktober-esque daily art challenge. Gave up after 3 days.

I completed most of the songs on the second A+B album, Phantom of the High School Puppet Theater, but wasn't able to finish two of them before Halloween came.

Also moar backgroundz.

November

Phantom of the High School Puppet Theater finally released, and on Newgrounds as well!

@RedMongoose, a musician who greatly inspired the Dipthong series, agreed to perform one of the tracks.

December

December's a work in progress. I'm still working on a few Christmas stuff, joining a few collabs, all that. This will be updated as 2024 starts, but by this point it's effectively wrapped up.

But in the meantime, I'm also working on Dipthong 3 and an EP under A+B. A lot of songs are already completed by this time, here's one of them:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-DXngrWfyQ

Some sad news. I also found out that The Juke Bottle Casino, a musician best known for their/her music in the 4 Madness shorts by Krinkels, reportedly died this year, according to someone in a private Discord server. They may have had a NG account somewhere. This was amidst a long streak of NG deaths starting in 2022.

I've made a tribute song/remix and it will be submitted it to the Break it Up Collab around January 15th. It'll incorporate all 4 songs used in the shorts.

UPDATES:

1- I did a quick snowman for the Snowman Collab

2- I rushed out parts for two Star Syndicate Christmas Collabs.

3- Participated in this year's Art Secret Santa event.

The Future:

What's next? I don't really know. But I do know what I haven't done this year.

First, there are two short films that I've sat on for an entire year. I may finish one of them this year

Next, I still have Dipthong 3 and an EP to finish. More news will come later.

Next, I have a few ideas for A+B music videos, mainly those from Dipthongs 2 or 3, which I might also be doing for 2024 or 2025.

However, I might not have enough time to do all that right now as I continue to study animation with the aim of finding work in that field (hopefully before the 2030s arrive and the Great Depression returns after 100 years). Until then, I wish a week ahead of time, a merry Christmas!

My new "Halloween" album Dipthong II : Phantom of the High School Puppet Theater has just released!

iu_1115520_8157415.webp

It's actually the second half of November, but if you want to be techinical, it ain't Halloween yet until @SrPelo finishes this year Spooky Month animation (hopefully not in January).

I just published the final three tracks (as mentioned in my last update):

Highlight: Trendbender, featuring @RedMongoose

In addition to Newgrounds, the album is also available to download on Bandcamp:

https://anonymousfrog.bandcamp.com/album/phantom-of-the-high-school-puppet-theater

You can watch it on the A+B YouTube channel (which I also just started)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvQr-Yvx3uw

And you can download a two-disc set totalling ~25 MB each (which you can share on Discord)

(Act 1: | Act 2:)

Art can be found here:

And now, the rest of my news: There's quite a lot.

Collabs

I'm doing a bit of work on a couple of collabs that might release in the next 1-2 months. Keep your eyes peeled, I won't reveal much!

Dipthong 3

Dipthong will continue, though it'll take a while: I'm drafting a third A+B album, albeit on and off while I continue my other projects.

2024 Plans (aka early New Years Resolution)

Of all the things I want to achieve in 2024, these are it:

1♦️ Animate a bunch of music videos for Phantom of the High School Puppet Theater, in addition to other artists:

With these, I plan to experiment with several art styles. Maybe I can finish them all this year, maybe it take me until the start of 2025, who knows?

These songs may end up with an official music video created by yours truly:

-Caught in the Act

-Trendbender,

-yeah (Intermission

-At least 1 song from the upcoming Dipthong 3

But one thing is certain, I will animate Trendbender. I will keep you updated if I ever start.

2♦️ Expand my portfolio, and I mean actually take this thing seriously this time: It's bad enough that my demo reel was last updated in February. This may involve taking some animation courses

3♦️ Start doing freelance or commissioned work, whether it be art, animation or music.

4♦️ Actually make some significant progress on a short film I originally conceived back in May. Right now I've only roughed out two scenes and the whole thing could be anywhere between 4-7 minutes.

The end for now:

That's all for now. To close off this post, I recently found a YouTuber that reacted to MADNESS: Operation X

Happy Halloween. Good news regarding the A+B album Phantom of the High School Puppet Theater.

Previous update

Progress:

Two versions of track 7, Bricked are published on Newgrounds. Idk which one to put in the final album.

Track 11, The Phantom is published.

So far, only three songs are left, enough songs for you to sit down and listen right now, Technically, today's the album's softlaunch, but in reality, it really needs an update patch.

1- Triangulation (the album's official conclusion and final track). Completed, but not published yet.

2- Caught in the Act. Starting production now.

3- Trendbender. The big one. See below:

Trendbender

Trendbender will be performed by RED.M, aka @RedMongoose.

RED.M has been producing music for over 15 years. including a couple of tracks for animators such as RubberNinja (Ross), Nogfish, and Felix Colgrave, as well as over a dozen albums of solo work.

His Sp00ky series in particular, is a major inspiration for PotHSPT, as well as the Dipthong series in general.

You can find more of his work on his YouTube channel. He's also publishing previously unreleased music on TikTok.

Examples of his vocal work are sparse, but they can be heard in his albums Parable of a Monstrosity and Caf&s, or more recently, this track Take a Breather

Another update for Phantom of the High School Puppet Theater. by A+B

Progress:

Intermission is finished.

I published Sophie

Unfortunately, PotHSPT (aka Dipthong 2) will not be finished by Halloween for various reasons, so I've delayed the album:

1- Production on Caught in the Act by @BeepBoxClock hasn't started yet, though it will be finished soon.

2- Trendbender will not be available at the moment. I'm still working something out.

3- Only the one album cover is currently finished. I still need to do a bunch of other art.

So here's the current plan.

All three remaining songs currently finished will be published on Newgrounds before Halloween. Caught in the Act will be finished first, then I'll draw all the remaining art.

Only after Trendbender is finished will I consider Dipthong 2 officially released.

In the meantime, here's the official album playlist:

Full Tracklist

1- hi (Welcome to the High School Puppet Theater)

2- Caught in the Act (Not done)

3- English, Sex, Politics (ESP)

4- Brent

5- Trendbender (a hole too big to fill right now)

6- Intermission

7- Bricked (I actually made two versions)

8- Sophie

10- Lorelei (2022)

11- The Phantom

12- Triangulation

Hi. Quick update regarding Phantom of the High School Puppet Theater. by A+B

Progress

In addition to the 3 others I already released on Newgrounds (Brent, Lorelei, Archdukes of the Machine), I released two new tracks (hi, and ESP)

Four other tracks (Bricked, Sophie, The Phantom, Triangulation) are fully completed and ready to release.

Caught in the Act and Intermission, both by @BeepBoxClock, the second half, are still in progress.

Trendbender still needs vocals, and thus will be the last song to be completed.

I expect to finish the entire thing by the end of Halloween (October 31st). It's possible I haven't put all the pieces together by then, so it'll be out by early November at the latest.

PotHSPT will be available for free on YouTube, Newgrounds, and Bandcamp. I'm also compiling a ZIP folder of all the MP3s for a direct download.

Full Tracklist

1- hi (Welcome to the High School Puppet Theater)

2- Caught in the Act (Not done)

Hi. Quick update on my upcoming A+B album Phantom of the High School Puppet Theater, aka Dipthong 2.

I temporarily put the album on hold so I can finish MADNESS: Operation X. Now I'm back to work and ready to get it done by Halloween. However, there's one big hurdle to overcome.

I need a vocalist/rapper:

One of the tracks, Trendbender has a set of written lyrics planned. and since I don't have the chops to sing or rap myself, I need a vocalist.

Theme: The song is performed from the perspective of the Trendbender itself, an all-knowing, somewhat sinister AI / robot who holds a high standard against content creators / web animators, namely those that follow existing trends and use cheap shortcuts because they think it will make them rich. Think of him as Satan, but for YouTubers.

Lyrics: Can be found here along with the instrumental to rap over.

Other things to note:

  1. The tone should roughly resemble that of Eminem/Slim Shady (example: Without Me), but not explicitly sounding like him.
  2. You don't need to do everything in one take. If you do one take, three takes, or splice them together, I don't mind, just as long as the mic quality is good, you're not clipping, and it suits the song, etc.
  3. The entire song's length is 2 and a half minutes total, with a handful of pauses. (about 50-60 bars total)
  4. I want the album done on Halloween (Oct 30th), so I recommend finishing it sometime before that (about October 27th, extended from the 24th).

If you're interested, message me here or on Discord with your demo-reel, rates, and other details you or I might need to know about. I'm willing to work with whatever you think is reasonable.

Happy belated Madness Day!

I may be one day overdue, but my Madness Day 2023 cartoon MADNESS: Operation X is finally finished, after an entire month in the pipeline. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I've worked myself to finish it.

I would like to thank

  • @50Steaks for letting me use his track "Nevada"
  • @RareKirby for stepping in at the last minute to do a couple of scenes (and also for giving me the opportunity to produce background art for two of his own animations)
  • @Krinkels for creating the Madness Combat series and keeping a 20+ year fanbase going strong.
  • Elon Musk, the richest Aspie in the world, for buying Twitter and taking me for a year-long ride, which in turn inspired this little short film.
  • And to whoever put it up on the front page, (@TomFulp I presume). I think I've finally earned it this time.

iu_1084780_8157415.png

Getting better at animation / Making bigger, better projects.

This is something I adressed a month ago, but I'd like to take the opportunity to explain further.

For the past year, aside from collabs, the only solo animations I've submitted to Newgrounds have been two dumb spam cartoons churned out in under a week, with Operation X serves as a turning point for me.

So what does the future hold for me?

- To start with, I'm going to continue getting better at animation, to be able to make stuff that's on par with some of my favourite artists and idols, notably ZekeySpaceyLizard ( Squaresville, Meat Grinder, etc.), Felix Colgrave (Double King, The Elephant's Garden, etc), and many others that I like that might clutter up this list.

(see my favourites and look at some of the better ones (See also: my animation watchlist)

-Expect a sparser upload schedule. Even my spammier cartoons should get a little bump in quality.

-I've gravitated towards making music videos, whether it be for other artists or my own A+B catalog. Operation X may technically count as one since I used the whole song, but I see the 50Steaks song more as a film score.

-Commercial work is a possibility, but unless I get better in the next few years, which might mean having to study in some boring classroom for 3 years, options are very limited. I'm mostly just building up experience at this point. Commissions may be possible in the near future, or maybe today if you complain hard enough and/or donate it to a random cause on my behalf.

- I'm still participating in collabs. I should be working on one for the Sega Saturn Collab.

-Revisiting old shit I made in previous years is unlikely, such as the 2020 Anonymous Frog series. If I ever do pick one up again, I'll let you know.

- No plans for Halloween, Christmas, or Valentine's Day.

- I'm working on two other major personal projects, after previously announcing three.
